Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (KJV)
Exodus 20:7 "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. (NIV 2010)
I was wondering if we understand that we are called to and designed to worship God. I think about how we so often use His name not just as a cuss word but as a pledge. As if anything we could do or say will stand before Him in our day of judgement. You know that when we misuse God's name it is a sin. The funny thing is people might not ever misuse His name but all the other filth that comes out of their mouths is enough to make a hardened sailor blush with shame. Matthew 12:34 "You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." When we allow trash to come out of our mouths we are showing others what is really in our hearts. I want you to consider that as you make postings on Facebook, Twitter and any conversations you might have. The off color joke you share or the racial crack you make all show what lies in your heart. James tells us in 3:9-12,"9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water." so it is not just the misuse of God's name we need to be careful of but every idle word we speak can bring destruction to ourselves and and our witness for Jesus Christ. Have a blessed day in the Lord may His word guide your path and nable you to control your tongue.
