Humility and Holiness

5  Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6  who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Phil 2:4-9 (ESV)
I was reading a book this evening its title is Humility it was written by Andrew Murray he was an outstanding Christian pastor and writer his life spanned from 1828-1917 and wrote several books about living the Christian life. This quote really spoke to me:
“Humility, the place of entire dependence on God, is, from the very nature of things, the first duty and the highest virtue of the creature, and the root of every virtue.” (Murray)
When I read that I really had to stop and think about the life we should be leading as we attempt to serve God. Humility is the key to our ability to serve Him correctly. You see when we live a life of humility it allows God’s Grace to flow out to those who need to see and experience His love. If we live a life in arrogance the only thing people will see is the world in you.  Andrew Murray stated it this way:
“Humility is not so much a grace or virtue along with others; it is the root of all, because it alone takes the right attitude before God, and allows Him as God to do all.”
We need to live a life of humility if we really want to know God as He desires to be known. The book talks about how the only thing that grows out from the root of the tree is the same kind of tree if the root is from the world that is all you will ever grow. To grow humility and holiness we must begin by starting at the root that understands Jesus’ humility in his birth, life, death and resurrection. In our world today we see humility as a weakness but it is actually a sign of real strength. It takes a lot of strength to live a humble life. If you get a chance I recommend you read this book. I am learning a lot about living a life in humility. Have a blessed day.
